Just An Average Dude

Just An Average Dude

Trying to Become An Extraordinary Dad Since 2008.

The Dude.

"I was on the ultimate dude trip when I found out that I was going to be a father. We had just landed on a dirt runway in the Arctic Ocean off the north slope of Alaska. I picked up the satellite phone to call my wife and let her know we had survived the most aggressive part of the trip. She told me that she thought she should take “the test.” I begged her to wait until I returned, but we both already knew in the core of our beings that she was pregnant. Six days later, we sat in our bedroom waiting for the test to share the results and I found myself mindlessly repeating “holy crap, holy crap, holy crap” as it came up positive.

Dude to Dad started as a genuine cry for help. I woke up the day after Thanksgiving (2008) and realized that in just 100 days I would be a dad. While I had known for months that I was going to be a father, and though Mrs. Dude had seen many visible signs of motherhood, I was still firmly rooted in my dudehood. With nowhere else to turn, I posted a video on the internet. Within 48 hours, I had received helpful advice from all over the country. Most importantly, it was clear that I wasn’t the only freaked out father-to-be and I wasn’t in this alone. Dude to Dad is my way of sharing this transition with other Dudes and Dads.

To catch you up, a bit of our back story...

First Came Love...

Amy and I met during an ice storm in November of 2005. In February of 2006, we had our first date...which lasted 7 days.

Then Marriage...

Because we were ready and the date was free, we were married that September 2nd in a chapel on the lake Amy grew up on.

Then...

Two years later, we decided to start thinking about having a baby. Apparently, there was more doing than thinking.

Amy

MRS. DUDE

Mrs. Dude has always been the reluctant star of the Dude to Dad community. Deeply private, she made rare but memorable appearances in videos, but could always be counted on for the one liners. When not ensuring the survival of Finn & Em, she's somewhere making, creating, and doing.

Emerson

BIG SISTER

Emerson's birth was livetweeted and she entered the world with more Twitter followers than most adults. Despite some early reluctance in front of the camera, Emerson has embraced her drama queen birthright. At five years old, she recently became the youngest TEDx speaker to ever take the stage.

Finian

LITTLE DUDE

Mr. Finn may only be a year old and faces stiff competition from Big Sister, but he is already asserting his rightful place in the Dude to Dad family. Finn's easy smile and strange obsession with boob-shaped lights has made him an internet star.

 #1 Amazon Parenting Bestseller

In June of 2012, we were approached by Christopher and the team at Familius Publishing with a vision for how we might write a series of books based on our Dude to Dad transition.

Despite crazy schedules and a short writing timeline, it was Mrs. Dude that concluded this was simply an opportunity that we couldn't say no to.

Dude to Dad’s First Nine Months was released in May of 2013 and quickly became a #1 Amazon Parenting Bestseller. It contains absolutely no expert advice or medical guidance. You can read about mucus plugs and colostrum elsewhere. What you will find is a candid, quick and often irreverent roadmap for making the most of your own personal transition from Dude to Dad.

Dude to Dad's Wisdom For Dad was released April of 2014. By accessing the social web and the power of the 75+ other dads, Wisdom For Dad cuts through the clutter to deliver brief, witty, snippets of wisdom every dad will appreciate.

I bought this book for my husband. When it came in the mail, I intended to read the first few pages to him, and we ended up reading the whole book together in one session.

When a dude is considering dad-dom, sometimes all he needs is the encouragement and wisdom of one who has recently crossed that hallowed threshold.

The Possibility Experiment

An Experiment in Raising A Child of Possibility

On the occasion of her 5th birthday, Miss Emerson and I made a very serious announcement. Over the next 12 months, we are embarking on journey in&of possibility.

Sparked by our TEDxFargo talk in 2013, our "year of possibility" will be exploring themes of passion, purpose, philanthropy, ambition, happiness, curiosity, creativity, faith and family. We will be asking big questions of "why," "what if," and "how might we." And, we hope you'll join us.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY PROJECT ON FACEBOOK →

The first step you can take is downloading, printing and signing "the Possibility Pledge." This is the guiding promise Emerson and I have made to abide by in the coming year. If you send us an image of your signed pledge or record a video reciting the pledge, we'll share it with the world.
